Love Is Love?
Would You Vote "Yes" to Same Sex Marriage?
By Wenyu Fang
Australia’s Parliament voted overwhelmingly to legalize same-sex marriage on December 7th. The final approval, with just four votes against the bill, came three weeks after a national referendum showed strong public support for gay marriage.
“This belongs to us all,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said. “This is Australia: fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect. For every one of us this is a great day.”
Based on this hot topic, we collect some interesting insights of our GBJ students coming from different countries towards same sex marriage. Just suppose that if you were a lawmaker of your country, would you vote “yes”?
Let’s take a look at their answers and their story with the legalization process of same sex marriage as a witness!
Jessica
Hong Kong, China
Definitely yes!
Love is love. You cannot stop someone loving the person who they love.
Yes
The government should not tell people who they are going to spend their time with. Marriage is basically a contract to tie people together. The government should not control it.
Kristina
Macedonia
Yes.
it is like that there should not be barriers between unions. It should not pose a restriction on who marries to whom.
Botlhe
Botswana
Yes and No
If I was a lawmaker, I would say no. The legalization of gay marriage is impossible in China, because of the low acceptance of homosexuality and relatively traditional mindset of decision makers.
However, as an individual, I would support. People’s sexual orientation can be different. Everyone has the right to enjoy life and love in a fair and upright manner.
Zhennan
China
Yes.
We cannot control what people want to do. If a person would be happy if they want to marry a guy with the same sex, we cannot ban it.
Tukaz
Azerbaijan
Reicho
Japan
Neither “yes” nor “no”
I would in the middle.
I am a Christian. But I have a gay friend. I want him to live a happy life.
If I’m not a Christian, I would support the same sex marriage.
NaanGa
Mongolia
No!
Mongolia is a country with a small population of only 3 million people.
The current policy in Mongolia is to encourage population growth, which would be weakened if the same-sex marriage bill got passed.
Alanna
Canada
"Why not?”
Actually, same sex marriage is none of my business. I usually don’t vote for these issues.
It’s their choice. They can do what they want to do
Thien
Thailand
Yes
I’m bot biased. If you want to get married to a same-sex guy, just do it! It is a human right to love the person you love, despite of gender.

The United States
I was in rural Texas interning as a radio journalist when the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage across the United States over two years ago. I remember spending the day driving around to different courthouses in the Texas countryside and interviewing officials about their response. Just as human, that was a proud moment for the country. The phrase at that time was “Love wins”. Love is love. At that point, it felt like a long overdue decision.
